The Chase: Kirk Maltby

Well, Mick got us over the 20 point hump on Thursday, paving the way for today’s jersey countdown representative: Kirk Maltby. With only 18 points needed to get to the mythical playoff-earning point total of 94, Motown’s finest can turn to their teammate to help inspire them towards the end goal of making the postseason.
If you’ve followed the Wings with any regularity this year, you know that Maltby is now sitting out the rest of the season after “opting” to have surgery on his bum soldier. Whether you believe Maltby just couldn’t play through the pain anymore or that he took the surgery to help Andreas Lilja return to the lineup, there’s no question that the Wings lost a grinding presence and solid defensive performer when Maltby hung it up for the year. Those attributes will be crucial in today’s matchup against the Sabres, who put the Wings down 6-2 earlier this season in Buffalo.
Grit. Tenacity. Hunger.
That’s what will get it done today, Wings. Make it happen.
