By the Numbers: Stars 4, Red Wings 3

Postgame Thoughts

A busy holiday slate of activities and the Irish pub in my building took up most of my time this weekend, so rather than write two separate recaps, I’m rolling it all into one “weekend” recap which will post later today. For now, here’s the numbers from the loss in Dallas on Saturday.

CSSI

*Season CSSI numbers are updated here.

Goal 1 (DET 1 DAL 0): Tomas Holmstrom (13) from Todd Bertuzzi (10) and Pavel Datsyuk (19) at 17:22, First Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Stuart, Meech
  • HP(+): Datsyuk (+0.5) for doing a nice job corralling the puck and carrying the zone. Bertuzzi (+0.5) for driving hard to the net and getting a shot on Turco, which led to the rebound in the slot. Holmstrom (+1) for following the play and crashing the net hard to poke in the rebound.

Goal 2 (DET 1 DAL 1): Karlis Skrastins (1) from Mike Ribeiro (20) and Jamie Benn (12) at 1:40, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Abdelkader, Draper, Eaves, Stuart, Lebda
  • DP(-): Draper (-1) is out there wandering around in no-man’s land with nobody to cover and Abdelkader (-1) doesn’t hustle to backcheck, leaving Skrastins wide open to bury the feed from Ribeiro.

Goal 3 (DAL 2 DET 1): James Neal (15) from Brad Richards (28) and Loui Eriksson (20) at 12:14, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Abdelkader, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • DP(-): Bertuzzi (-1) for failing to body up Neal. All he has to do is put a shoulder into him or box him out of the crease and this one stays out of the net.

Goal 4 (DET 2 DAL 2): Pavel Datsyuk (8) from Todd Bertuzzi (11) and Nicklas Lidstrom (12) at 15:39, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Eaves, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • HP(+): Great play all around. Lidstrom (+1) makes a great stretch pass to catch Dallas in a line change. Bertuzzi (+1) shows great patience in waiting for Datsyuk to get in position and then puts a shot right over the blade of Pav’s stick. Datsyuk (+1) for getting just enough of it to change direction and beat Turco.

Goal 5 (DAL 3 DET 2): James Neal (16) from Karlis Skrastins (6) and Loui Eriksson (21) at 16:45, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Abdelkader, Eaves, Leino, Lidstrom, Stuart
  • DP(-): Unfortunate bounce here on the rebound. Puck goes right to Neal, who is covered pretty darn well by Stuart. However, Jimmah had come out high on the initial shot and was WAY out of position to handle that rebound, leaving Neal a gaping net to shoot at. No deductions here.

Goal 6 (DET 3 DAL 3): Todd Bertuzzi (10) from Pavel Datsyuk (20) and Drew Miller (3) at 19:00, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Miller, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • HP(+): Datsyuk (+1) for the great stickwork to get free on this play and to put a perfect  backhand pass on Bertuzzi’s stick. Bertuzzi (+1) for putting it home with some serious authority in the top corner.

Goal 7 (DAL 4 DET 3): Karlis Skrastins (2) from Brad Richards (29) and James Neal (14) at 1:16, Third Period

  • Wings on ice: Helm, Draper, Miller, Lebda, Janik
  • DP(-): Besides the fact that Jimmah should have this one, the defense gets the finger of blame here. Lebda (-1) crashes down towards the net to try and pick up a wide open James Neal in the slot as the puck is moved down low. Why is James Neal wide open? Because Janik (-1) is standing in the crease doing NOTHING. With two defenders standing in front of Howard, Skrastins takes the return pass and buries it for the eventual game winner.

Miscellaneous Points

  • HP(+): Miller (+1) continues to be one of the hardest working players on the ice and finds a way to create chances whenever he’s in the game. Very impressed. Lidstrom (+1) with one of his best games in awhile. Looked confident the entire game and now just needs to find a way to bury one.
  • DP(-): Abdelkader (-1) went -3 on the day. Ugh.
