By the Numbers: Oilers 4, Red Wings 1
December 4th, 2009 | by Chris Hollis |Postgame Thoughts
- Serves me right. I go and say something nice about Jimmah and he goes out and gets scored on twice by Edmonton and twice by his teammates.I’m putting my reservation at Crow on hold.
- Besides the SUCKFEST that was Jimmah in goal last night, not much else good happened for the Wings, punctuated by the injury to Jonathan Ericsson that may or may not hold him out of action this weekend. Normally, I’d be OK with this fact given that Ericsson has been pretty rough throughout this season, but when your next defensive options are Andy Delmore or Doug Janik, things aren’t quite so rosy.
- Honestly though, how firggin bad was that entire series where Edmonton got their third goal. I have no idea how Derek Meech was able to make a routine pass go awry so badly, but he sure showed me. And then Jimmah looks as stupid as the coyote after getting schooled by the roadrunner as he lays in the crease and watches the puck SLOW roll under his equipment and into the net. It was almost comical.
- Two non-comical items: 1) Since when has Patrick O’Sullivan become such a Wings killer? Good lord. 2) Now that Howard has allowed 9 goals in two starts against the Oilers, maybe Mike Babcock should think about starting someone else in net when they play them again on March 19th and 30th. I’m just sayin…
- Honestly, I got nothing else on this one. I’m just going to do like Larry Murphy and “ball this one up and throw it away.” And maybe drink another liter of whiskey.
Numbers are below. Have fun.

*Season CSSI numbers are updated here.
Goal 1 (EDM 1 DET 0): Lubomir Visnovsky (6) unassisted at 5:50, First Period
- Wings on ice: Abdelkader, Maltby, May, Lebda, Kindl
- DP(-): Lebda (-1.5) OWN GOAL FAIL.
Goal 2 (EDM 2 DET 0): Robert Nilsson (2) from Ryan Stone (4) and Zack Stortini (3) at 17:09, First Period
- Wings on ice: Abdelkader, Maltby, May, Ericsson, Kindl
- DP(-): Kindl (-1) had every chance to get this puck out of the zone and ends up turning it over…to Stortini of all people. Abdelkader (-0.5) guesses wrong on which way Stone is going to go and takesĀ himself out of position to block the pass to Nilsson. Ericsson (-1.5) for getting absolutely OWNED by Nilsson. What a move. Play the body, Jonny.
Goal 3 (EDM 2 DET 1): Danny Cleary (6) from Todd Bertuzzi (9) and Nicklas Lidstrom (8) at 19:59, First Period
- Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Cleary, Bertuzzi, Lidstrom, Ericsson
- HP(+): Lidstrom (+1) for a great outlet pass. Bertuzzi (+1) for the nice vision and on-the-tape pass. Cleary (+1) for the nice finish to beat the horn.
Goal 4 (EDM 3 DET 1): Patrick O’Sullivan (5) from Jean-Francois Jacques (4) at 8:50, Second Period
- Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Leino, Bertuzzi, Stuart, Meech
- DP(-): Meech (-1.5) for a god-awful giveaway at the blue line. That was terrible. The rest of this is all a big JIMMAH FAIL.
Goal 5 (EDM 4 DET 1): Patrick O’Sullivan (6) from Sheldon Souray (5) at 11:47, Second Period
- Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Cleary, Lidstrom, Stuart
- DP(-): Zetterberg (-1) for failing to pick up O’Sullivan. Watch the play. Hank is just aimlessly skating around and O’Sullivan slips right behind him and into the area where Hank should have been. The rest? JIMMAH FAIL.
Miscellaneous Points:
- HP(+): Not that I should do this, because the whole team sucked tonight, but here’s (+0.5) for Kindl. He played well, looked confident and only had the one failed clearing attempt that turned into Nilsson’s goal. Let’s hope he builds on it in NY/NJ this weekend, as he will be traveling with the team.
- DP(-): Holmstrom (-1) for missing a gaping net. Abdelkader (-1) for missing a glorious chance from Ericsson. Datsyuk (-1) for triple-cocking on a wide open net as well. Leino (-1) for another no show. Blown chances, boys.

You’re against Jimmy again? I thought we talked about this. Rookies are up and down. The second own goal was brutal but c’mon.. since when do NHL teams deflect pucks at their own net? The problem lies elsewhere.
I’d disagree with Abdelkader getting a minus on the Nilsson goal, I thought he was trying to put Stone into the boards. Supposedly, Kindl had Stortini and Ericsson had Nilsson, Abdelkader was trying to take his man out of the play.
Seriously, what are the chances of..
- Zach Stortini beating.. anyone.. in a puck battle.
- Ryan Stone firing a blind pass through a set of legs to someone wide open in the slot.
- Robert “Sniper” Nilsson actually finishing on a nice move.
- These three things happening in the span of a second and a half.
Ericsson looked like an ass, but he had almost no time to react. There’s a thing called “puck luck” that Mike Babcock talks about a lot. And that’s the kind of goal that’s scored against you when you’re getting none of it. It just happened so fast, I don’t really fault anyone.

I too thought that Howard let in some weak goals. I just don’t think that he’s ready to be in the NHL, he needed more time as a backup.
My thought is that we should have kept Conklin and given up Osgood, he’s playing better and we’d be able to get a couple more years out of him, years that Howard would use to become the goalie Detroit needs in the future.

No Kyle, I’m not against Jimmah again, because I promised you and everyone else that I wouldn’t be. Just disappointed in the game he played that night, that’s all. It’s sad, but I still feel more confident with him in net than I do with Osgood between the pipes.
As for the scoring of the play, I do see your point and I’m contemplating adjusting the numbers to reflect that. That said, the goal served as a metaphor for how bad the night was for the Wings, so I’m tempted to leave it in place just to make some sort of statement of frustration against the team.
I’m sure that’ll fix everything…
