By the Numbers: Weekend Update

November 30th, 2009 | by Chris Hollis |

Thoughts

First off, I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving weekend. I spent mine with some extended family in town, so I was all over greater Seattle for the most part. However, I did get a few minutes in between bites of leftover turkey and mashed potatoes to watch the Wings and it was pretty depressing until the switch flipped in St. Louis. The Calgary game was pretty much a blank for me, and I found it incredibly difficult to put words to how I felt after watching another performance go so awry. I think Kujawa pretty much summed up my thoughts, so I’ll let you marinate on his words in place of my own.

As for Saturday’s tilt at St. Louis, well, it didn’t look like it was going to go much better. Which really sucked considering I got home from failing to acquire a new TV to flip on GameCenter and immediately see the Blues jump out to a 2-0 lead. I even went so far as to tweet that I needed to take a break from the team for awhile and would check back “in a week.” Frustration makes you do funny things sometimes. In any case, it was nice to see them battle back and get a gritty, hard fought win and let’s hope there are more of those in the future.

There will be plenty more in terms of analysis below, so I’ll let you get moving towards that. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Red Wings Blogger Deathmatch that is going on over at NHLArena. There’s a plethora of fine blogging talent competing over there, and although this hack of a Wings blogger didn’t make the cut as one of the top Wings blogs, I still encourage you to go over and vote for your favorites.

CSSI

*Season CSSI numbers are updated here.

11.27 vs. Calgary

Goal 1 (CGY 1 DET 0): Jamie Lundmark (1) from Olli Jokinen (13) and Jarome Iginla (8) at 0:28, First Period

  • Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Cleary, Leino, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • DP(-): Despite the Wings being on their heels early, no points off here. Hank was with Lundmark and Rafalski was with Jokinen until a slight pick from Iginla knocked Rafalski down, leaving Hank to pickĀ  between Lundmark or Jokinen. He split the difference, and Jokinen feathered a perfect pass to Lundmark. not much you can do there.

Goal 2 (CGY 2 DET 0): Nigel Dawes (6) from David Moss (5) at 18:29, First Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Ericsson, Lebda
  • DP(-): Lebda (-1) for the awkward looking effort to try and break up a turnover, leading to an odd man rush. Datsyuk (-1) for getting stripped while stickhandling the puck in front of the net when he should have just tried to clear it off the boards.
  • HP(+): Haven’t pulled out the “HP” on an opponent’s goal in awhile, but I really feel like Ericsson deserves a (+0.5) here (I can’t believe I just typed that). He did a nice job breaking up the odd-man rush, and looked like he had things under control until Datsyuk came back in support and couldn’t keep the puck from being poked away by Dawes.

Goal 3 (CGY 3 DET 0): Olli Jokinen (4) from Jamie Lundmark (2) and Jarome Iginla (9) at 0:25, Third Period

  • Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Cleary, Leino, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • DP(-): Leino (-1) for the turnover in the offensive zone. Lidstrom (-0.5) for failing to drop down and pick up the wide open Jokinen, albeit because he was trying to provide some help to an out-of-position Leino.

11.28 @ St. Louis

Goal 1 (STL 1 DET 0): David Backes (4) from David Perron (6) and Darryl Sydor (4) at 13:24, First Period

  • Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Cleary, Leino, Lidstrom, Ericsson
  • DP(-): Tough last second redirection here, but Ericsson (-0.5) still loses points here for failing to get a body on Backes in front of the net. Who knows, if Big E gets physical and pushes him out, this may be an easy save for Jimmah.

Goal 2 (STL 2 DET 0): Roman Polak (2) from David Backes (5) and Paul Kariya (5) at 17:22, First Period

  • Wings on ice: Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Miller, Stuart, Lebda
  • DP(-): Miller (-1) decides to slide down and try to help Lebda trap Backes, but leaves his man Polak open at the point. Unfortunately, Polak bombs a shot past the out of position Miller and it beats Howard through a mess of traffic.

Goal 3 (PPG) (STL 2 DET 1): Tomas Holmstrom (10) from Henrik Zetterberg (16) and Pavel Datsyuk (13) at 2:35, Second Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • HP(+): Datsyuk (+1) for showing great patience to let the play develop and threading a nice cross-ice pass to Hank. Zetterberg (+1) for a perfect pass to Homer. Holmstrom (+1) for being in the right place to finally b reak the scoring drought.

Goal 4 (DET 2 STL 2): Kris Draper (4) from Patrick Eaves (5) and Darren Helm (4) at 2:27, Third Period

  • Wings on ice: Helm, Draper, Eaves, Lidstrom, Lebda
  • HP(+): Holy cow, what a mess of a play. Eaves (+0.5) for fighting to keep the play alive in the corner and moving the puck. Helm (+0.5) for firing the puck in the general direction of the traffic in front of the net. Eaves (+0.5) again for being in front of the net and providing a skate for Helm’s “shot” to hit and Draper (+1) for following the play and crashing the net to bury the tying goal.

Goal 5 (STL 3 DET 2): Brad Boyes (6) from David Perron (7) and Andy McDonald (8) at 8:32, Third Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Eaves, Lidstrom, Stuart
  • DP(-): Frankly, it makes me sick to keep doing this, but what the hell is going on with Lidstrom this year? Another bad play in front of the net (-1) as Boyes just outworks him for position with his body and winds up poking at the loose rebound until it gets home.

Goal 6 (DET 3 STL 3): Henrik Zetterberg (10) from Todd Bertuzzi (7) and Tomas Holmstrom (4) at 19:03, Third Period

  • Wings on ice: Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Zetterberg, Bertuzzi, Lidstrom, Rafalski
  • HP(+): Insane play. Everyone gets a (+0.5) for all the work keeping this play alive. Zetterberg gets an additional (+1) for the ol’ bank shot off Jackman to tie it up.

Miscellaneous Points:

  • HP(+): Datsyuk (+1) for scoring in the shootout. Bertuzzi (+1.5) for scoring in the shootout and getting the monkey off the back of the slumping Wings.
  • DP(-): Zetterberg and Cleary both get (-0.5) for failing to convert in the SO. If we would have lost, it would have been more points.

44-Todd Bertuzzi (+2) 0 (+2) 0

40-Henrik Zetterberg (+1.5) (-0.5) (+1) 0

Great post. Thanks for doing this. I know it takes so much time, but I really enjoy the CSSI numbers – it’s a lot of fun.
