Drew Miller: Yay or Nay?

November 10th, 2009 | by Chris Hollis |

UPDATED 11/11 (12:35 PM EST): According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Detroit has claimed Drew Miller off of waivers.

I can’t say I’m THAT surprised. Financially, it makes sense given Miller’s $525K salary. Factor in that Ken Holland has followed Miller since his days at MSU and that the Wings could use some extra bodies with all of the injuries, and Miller makes the most sense.

It’s also worth noting that he does bring Western Conference experience from his days in Anaheim, although the point production has been limited:

Career NHL Totals (including playoffs): 83 GP, 8 G, 10 A, 18 PTS, -5

Oh, and 1 Stanley Cup.

John Fontana of Raw Charge has noted that there are reports that Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Drew Miller has reportedly been placed on waivers by the team.

Fontana:

Michael Russo of the Minnesota Star Tribune reported this afternoon via Twitter that Drew Miller was among several NHL players that have been placed on waivers today.  This has been confirmed by St. Pete Times beat writer Damian Cristodero.

Miller, 25, has yet to find his way into the scoring column (no points) in 14 games this season and is a -3.

If Miller was to clear waivers, he would be assigned to Norfolk of the AHL.

If Miller does hit the waiver wire, does he become a target for the Red Wings? GM Ken Holland has repeatedly said that he won’t go out and get a player to help reinforce the roster with some of the Wings’ injuries. That may very well be the case, but let’s not forget that Holland is very close with the MSU program and is very familiar with Miller and his three years with the Spartans. Add to that the fact that Miller is only making $525k this season and becomes an RFA at the end of the season, and one has to believe that Miller might at least garner a glance from Kenny. Whether anything comes from that glance is another story.

What do you think? Is Miller worth taking a chance on? Hit me up in the comments.

Wow, another fourth line scrub we can play, woo! Picking up a guy that couldn’t even crack the Lightnings roster isn’t really a good idea…
