Shaking things up: May inks, moves up. Abdelkader back to Grand Rapids

October 8th, 2009 | by Chris Hollis |

In a surprising move today, the Red Wings have inked Brad May to a one-year deal, and have called the veteran forward up to the big squad. As a result,  Justin Abdelkader finds himself heading back to Grand Rapids a bit earlier than expected.

What’s really interesting about this move is that coach Mike Babcock has now said that May will be in the lineup tonight against the Blackhawks if the “paperwork gets done”, and would replace Patrick Eaves in the lineup. That would have to be disheartening to Eaves, who was looking to make his first start for the Wings tonight after sitting out the two games in Sweden. However, if all the legal hurdles aren’t cleared, Eaves will get the nod tonight.

Another potential storyline to keep an eye on is what this will do to Darren Helm when he finally returns from his shoulder injury. It’s hard to tell right now how things will shake out, but it’s not impossible that Abdelkader and Helm could both wind up down in Grand Rapids because of this move.

I’ll have more on the May situation tonight after the game, along with the updated production charts and CSSI.
